So with the new edition of a kitten the amount of work I have to put into cleaning it is getting too much for me to handle.  I know it's only 2 cats but I work full time and I'm a full time student at night so to find the few minutes it takes can be a hassle sometimes.  I've recently been looking at reviews for an automatic litter box.  I've found some pretty good ones about the fresh step automatic litter box.  Let me know what you think!

I used to have an automatice kitty litter box.  It was very easy, but I noticed that the urine smell still lingered.  Not to mention; you have to buy the clumping litter which is rather expensive.  I still find it easier to just dump the whole thing (normal box) and fill it with fresh litter.

What really concerns me with those things is the motor. I have seen a lot of reviews about certain boxes where the motor dies out way to soon, and in some cases with more then one cat they will last a week. And then I have seen other boxes last for over 8 years. You really have to do your research on them.

Well I normally get the clumping litter anyway so I'm used to spending more on litter.  So I think it will be cheaper in the long run because I feel like I'm constantly buying litter.  I just purchase the Fresh Step one - I did some research on it and it had really good reviews on it compared to ones like the littermaid.  I'll keep you posted on how it works when I receive it.

Oh, and one more thing!  They do make some noise; so if you can put a nice distance away from your bedroom; that would be a good idea.  When I had one, it was when I was in High School and I had to keep it in my bedroom; woke me up all the time!

I have a Littermaid automatic litter box. It is so much easier because I have multiple cats. I use the Fresh Step multi-cat litter in the box. I have had this litter box for about 5 years and it has last. The only thing that I have had to buy for it is the little ramp to it. The cats sometimes coming running down the ramp which wears it out and it just doesn't want to stay put. I did have to buy a tent once because one of the cats would lay on top of it and broke one of the poles. Otherwise I haven't had any problems.

We did some searching and researched some reviews. We did come across some different items like the Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box (which we are leaning towards) and the LitterMaid (Which ChristineP mentioned).

We also came across the Litter-Robot, which I must say looks a little weird and I don't know if the cats would even try it. Otto would prob attack it.

There was some radical ideas like this: Click Here

Quote
# atGenie Self Washing/Self Flushing Cat Boxes. AUTOMATICALLY FLUSHES CAT WASTE DOWN YOUR TOILET!
# The automatic cat box that's Completely self-washing. ** No litter to scoop, touch, or change ** Uses permanent Washable Granules ** Flushes cat waste out of the home ** Automatically washes, sanitizes, dries ** Dust, odor, germ, and litter free ** You'll never touch or change litter again!
# The innovative CatGenie Self Washing/Self Flushing Cat Box revolutionizes cat sanitation by eliminating the need to scoop, clean, and dispose of messy litter. Waste removal is dust, germ, odor, and hassle-free! Uses permanent, washable granules that are automatically washed and dried after each use. Liquids drain through the granules and solid waste is scooped, liquefied, and deposited into the hopper where both are flushed with fresh water down any toilet or sink drain.
# The CatGenie then dispenses a special SaniSolution to wash and disinfect the bowl and granules, while the GenieHand scoop aerates and the built-in hot air blower dries the sanitized granules. Includes hardware for simple, one-time hookup to a water supply, washable granules, SaniSolution cartridge, and instructions. Requires a 110 volt outlet.

Seems interesting, but expensive. I still affirm my worries about a motor, and how long they last, but I must say even with ChristineP pointing out as well as reviews I have read, the Littermaid lasts for a long time.

But still, I think reviews are mixed...

The Litter-Robot looks like something used in a radiology department for a test.

The Littermaid might not be right for every household. It works well for me. I have another cat, Blackie, who hates stepping in litter. With regular litter boxes, he would always "go" outside the litter box or on a rug in the family room. When I got the Littermaid, he stopped doing that. He has a place he can stand where he can "go" without stepping in litter. It just works out better for me. No more little surprises.  Smiley

Well I decided to go with the Fresh Step Automated Litter Box because I got it like $40 cheaper than it goes for from Amazon.com with free shipping.  I ordered it on Saturday and got it yesterday (the next business day).  I set it up last night when I got home from school and I was reading the instructions that came with it and it says that it can take 7-10 for you cat to get used to it.  It was extremely easy to set up - I took it out of the box, plugged it in and put the fresh step crystals in it and that was it.  Otto used it immediately...it wasn't even set up for 5 minutes and he had to test it out lol.  Stella on the other hand seemed kind of weirded out by it so last night I left the regular litter box next to the Fresh Step one and hadnt noticed if she used either of them.  This morning I put the regular litter box away and she went in the fresh step box and was freaked out with the crystals but I think she is getting used to it - she has been using it so I'm assuming so.  So far so good I know it's only the first day but the odor is definitely illuminated and that's my goal since no matter how often I cleaned the regular one it still smelled so bad.

The smell definitely is less with an automatic litter box. There is a tent over the litter box I have. It gives the kitties privacy, and does lessen the smell when the go to the potty.

I'm really glad that you like it so much!  And sounds like you got a good deal on it too!

I def. got a good deal on it and it's been a little more than a week and so far so good with everything.  The only time I smell it is after they go to the bathroom it takes 20 minutes before it goes through the sweeping cycle after they use it.  But once it sweeps it there is no more odor.  They both use it fine but the funny thing is when it does go through the cycle both cats run up to the box and stare at it and Stella even hisses and hits the rake as its moving lol.
